My 16-year-old son was paralyzed in a car accident in October 2008 on his way home from football practice. He is back in school now and is doing wheelchair racing for his school's track team, but is really interested in weight training, bodybuilding and powerlifting. He was cleared by his surgeon for racing, shot put and "usual activities." What is the best way for him to get started in this sport and how long does it usually take before a beginner can start doing competitions?

That's Great he is not letting what happen hold him back! To get started he just needs to get on a Workout Program that focuses on what goal he is trying to achieve. Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, Racing... and so on.
Getting involved in this sport he just needs train specific to Bodybuilding, that way he will get bigger and leaner to show off his body the best. Once he is ready he just needs to show up at a Show and compete. I go into great detail here: http://www.wheelchair-bodybuilding.com/competing
To know what shows are coming up: http://www.wheelchair-bodybuilding.com/upcoming_shows
Most of the guys compete at the NPC Show, As of now Wheelchair Nationals is the #1 Show to compete at and USA Wheelchair Championship is #2.
A beginner can start anything. Nationals is next Saturday, if your son wants to, he can show up and compete.

Thanks for the info! He has a while to go before he is ready for a show, but his work in the weight room is starting to pay off. He lost 20 pounds in the hospital, but is starting to get his upper body bulked up. He is probably more muscular already than he was before his accident. I think this will be a great sport for him.

That is Great! I hope he wants to get involved with the sport! Once your son does compete, I will put his Bio in the Bio section and then the world will know who he is!
